SuperSU v2.35 is rolling out on Play as we speak (Amazon will also be updated soon). The flashable ZIP is available via http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu immediately as well. All CF-Auto-Root's have already been updated.

The last full Play update was v2.01, if you want to know all the changes since then, see the changelog post in SuperSU's main XDA thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23427824&postcount=3

The How-To SU document - http://su.chainfire.eu/ - has also been updated with the latest information. There's a lot on SELinux that may not be relevant to all root app devs, but it will be to some. If you're a dev, I'd advise reading through it, if only so you know where to look if you do run into an issue.

From 4.4 to 5.0

It's been a bumpy ride, and there have been a lot of changes along the way. Things initially solved one way, ended up getting scrapped and being solved other ways, as AOSP progressed and L preview releases came out.

From needing heavy work-arounds for basic commands, to boot image (ramdisk) patches, back to simple commands by employing live policy patches and hooking daemon launch in a different way.

Some shortcuts could have been taken. Initially, I was focused on getting everything to work without having to patch SELinux, which led to some pretty hefty experiments and codewise lengthy work-arounds. As security patches kept being committed to AOSP though, there was a turning point where it was just no longer viable to keep root without patching the policies, even if only slightly. This caused a change in perspective that lead to implementing some things very differently. Had I not been as stubborn to start out with (what else is new), some work (and time) could have been saved.

When it was time for L retail, they closed the flash_recovery service loophole which was used to start SuperSU's daemon. Because of this, SuperSU couldn't start at boot. This was no surprise to anyone paying attention - system logs have been warning of the service running unprotected for months. This is why we used ramdisk patches to launch the daemon for a while. That was fixed again a few beta versions ago. There's been some commentary about how brilliant a solution that was, but really it wasn't - personally I consider it a pretty big oversight not spotting this solution immediately when it was needed, and a bit of hassle for a fair number of users could have been avoided.

Still, aside from the drawbacks for those with locked bootloaders, I would not have minded a modified ramdisk solution that much. It would have been a good excuse to patch in an overlayfs for /system as well, so modifications to /system would not actually be written to the system partition, but to a container elsewhere. This would preserve system integrity and OTA capabilities and prevent most bootloops caused by root apps situation (or at least allow quick reversal without needing to restore backups from a recovery). A pretty clean solution to some common issues that I was actually starting to look forward to. But it seems we're not going there now, and at least for some it is better this way.

Though all in all, it was a mostly fun learning experience - coming from noob-level SELinux knowledge - imagine how much easier and quicker it would be to bring up a solution like this now that all the information is available, though.

Material

Over the last few beta releases SuperSU has gotten a bit more material-y on the default theme, but it's still far from perfect. This is not a top priority for me at the moment. Aside from other apps needing some love, SuperSU still supports 2.x devices and all sorts of form factors no longer in use on more modern devices, so there's already enough similar-but-not-quite-the-same layouts in there, I am not enthusiastic about adding another set. Because of this, I've only made minor changes and tweaks, that do not significantly impact the overall layout, structure, or associated code.

Add to that, the compatibility libraries already in use and the material one are incompatible with eachother thus far, so those material changes that are present are not being backported to 4.x yet either.

This will be resolved in time, just not today. The UI code could use an overhaul, and 2.x support is up for review as well. The ideal time for a more extensive material makeover is when those two intersect. I will continue to make minor adjustments over the next few releases, though.

Of course, I always welcome mock-ups of what you think it should look like. I have decided on teal as the primary color though, as you will have noticed.

Note that it is possible after this update that you have two SuperSU icons on your app drawer. If this happens, go to SuperSU's settings, and change the launcher icon option to whichever one you want to use, and the other one will disappear again. This is caused by the new material style icon that was added and made default on 5.0+.

IAPs as donations/support

Pro users will have additional in-app donation options. Some very supportive users like repeatedly supporting my developments (thanks, I really appreciate that), and the number of people emailing me about not wanting to use PayPal is on the rise. So here's another option to do it. Like getting SuperSU Pro itself, this is completely optional and does not unlock any features (remember there's a checkbox in settings to get all Pro features if you don't want to or are not able to pay for Pro).

I also have a magic internet money address for those so inclined (BTC): 1JeoxivKEXbbiegsv1BrUC7fD7GgSPcqkG

Undoubtedly I'll get some hate for this, but shrug.

Rollout issues

The last few beta releases have been largely uneventful, so I do not expect that many issues with this rollout. That being said, many millions of users will be updated, using hundreds of different devices, running on several different firmwares each, so I'm sure there will be at least some issues. Thousands of beta users does not equate to millions of end-users, after all.

So far, a Lollipop leak for the Sprint S5 was leaked earlier today for which we already know this new version has some issues (it can work, though). I will look at that when we get a firmware leak that actually runs on hardware I have here. There have also been reported oddities with the last beta on CM12, but so far I was not able to reproduce these, and this rollout has been delayed enough already. Once the cause of the issues have been found, there'll be another update.

+Chainfire when I used the cf-autoroot prior to this one for my nexus 7 2013, it patched the boot image. Does this version, remove the patch yet keep root? Or does the patch not affect future lollipop ota's?

Chainfire commented on 2014-11-26 at 22:45:

+melissa johnson which device and firmware? how did you perform the install? Flashed full ZIP, updated from store, then "normal" method, or "TWRP/CWM" method? And if the latter, which one and which version do you have?

+Thomas Börkel I'm not sure why the Nexus 5 CFAR wasn't updated. There's a handful of other devices not updated either. Running the update script again, but this takes a few hours.

+Marco Scardovi do you mean the text on the Play store, or Italian inside the app? The latter can be contributed to here: http://www.getlocalization.com/supersu/

Thomas Börkel commented on 2014-11-26 at 22:47:

It would help, if there were some version.txt inside the ZIP. ;-)

How to get fully rid of 2.20? Unroot, flash system, flash boot, flush cache? Thanks!

The theme of the SuperSU app is real nice !

Chainfire commented on 2014-11-26 at 22:59:

+Thomas Börkel the Nexus5 CFAR is updated now, I think. Reflash stock boot.img, then flash a newer SuperSU/CFAR/whatever.

+Wim Vandekerckhove you can flash back the old boot.img if you want. You're not going to get OTAs until you reflash your /system anyway, regardless of patching kernel. Keeping the old kernel does no harm, though.

+Connor Kirkby select any theme from settings but the material light / dark action bar ...

Chainfire, how root a Samsung Galaxy Ace 4 Lite?

Wim Vandekerckhove commented on 2014-11-26 at 23:06:

+Chainfire what would be the proper method then to proceed. Refresh system then use the latest cf-autoroot. I presume that one will not patch the kernel? I'm not very tech savvy when it comes to the actual inner mechanics of rooting and ota's. Feel free to continue this over at XDA through pm. I'm the one that sent you that pm about sixaxis (no support question.

I want to be as stock as possible with root.

John Benteu commented on 2014-11-26 at 23:49:

+Chainfire, so basically the autoroot will wipe every Nexus 6 since they come encrypted, correct? I was trying to use Wugfresh earlier, and flashed your zip. In the process I lost half my HDD when I did (which Wug said is common) and had to factory reset to get it back, which then removed SuperSU and I was left unrooted again. If I flash your zip through adb, I shouldn't run into that "loss of space" issue, correct?

Edit: Nevermind. Wug just upgrade his toolkit to use your new .zip (You have to select BETA for it work). It worked flawlessly and did not wipe anything off the device at all.

Matt Katzenberger commented on 2014-11-26 at 23:51:

+Chainfire if I rooted my nexus 9 with the CF-autoroot that was doing kernel patches will I need to do something special or just update from the play store?

Fernando Viñan-Cano commented on 2014-11-27 at 00:02:

+Chainfire great work as always.

Would it be possible to include a short quite or maybe a link to a guide that tells us how to revert back the boot and system images? I can see many including myself for my N5 needing to get back for OTA compatibility, but as we relied on you excellent tools to get the rooting done, we don't all have the knowledge on reflashing the separate images.

Steven Ege commented on 2014-11-27 at 00:22:

On July 5th, I mentioned on the XDA SuperSU thread that as an owner of a device that was still running Android 2.x Chainfire should focus on 4.x and up rather than worrying about legacy devices. Between then and now, I have updated to a device (Galaxy S4) that has no issue with 2.35. Regardless, my thoughts on the matter are still the same.

Back then, Gingerbread and Froyo combined were at about 20%. As of Nov. 3, 2014, the number is around 10%. Thus, while the numbers should speak for themselves in persuading Chainfire to sunset 2.x support, when continued support for 2.x is reviewed, I vote to end it. With all the work Chainfire has done to get SuperSU working correctly on Android 5.0, continuing support for 10% of the total device installs drains resources better spent on the remaining 90%.

Is it possible to update from BETA-SuperSU-2.30 to UPDATE-SuperSU-2.35 via the Play store?

When I update from the Play store, opening SuperSU prompts me that the binaries need updated.

When I continue, the installation fails and am told to reboot and try again (which again fails).

Alexander Zapatka commented on 2014-11-27 at 01:38:

+chainfire slight issue: Updated my mtk clone running 4.2 through the play store. It installed, supersu and said the binary needed updating, so I said ok, and chose "normal method", as I always did in the past. It reported 'failed' and supers dumped out. I tried a couple more times, got the same results. So I tried the cwm/twrp method. It rebooted to recovery, flashed the update.zip, then my recovery warned me I had no root access any more. I.e. no su binary, and prompted me to fix it (I use carliv touch recovery). I said no, rebooted, and supersu also reported no su binary. So I said screw it all, downloaded the flashable zip, uninstalled supersu, booted to recovery and installed it. Which lead me to a bootloop. I have never had this before. I wish I saved a log or two, but my last nandroid is about a month old, and I was quite passed at myself for not making one before this, so I just restored without thinking and I have 68 package updates to go on my phone. Just wanted to report an issue. Maybe later I'll try updating the supersu package again and send you a log if I have the problem again.

And as both system ROM's are affected, I will need to find a way to fastboot/flash the device. Before I used the updater to install the decuro ROM...

Chainfire commented on 2014-11-27 at 14:14:

For those that are reporting bootloops, please stop solving the issue (by reflashing or otherwise) before we can look at it, else we'll never find the cause. There is no reproducable case yet. I can't make a fix without knowing the issue.

If your device does not boot but you can enter recovery, and you are going to reflash, please make a backup of /system first, it may be able to help find the issue. Also report to the XDA thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053

If the binary update doesn't stick for some reason (SuperSU keeps asking you to update), report to the update failures thread on XDA and provide the requested information and logs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/support-update-failures-t2907365

A crash issue with 2.x and 3.x devices has been identified and will be fixed in the next update. Which will be whenever the cause for the bootloops is also found.

+Chainfire Sorry about the noise! The bootloop might have been triggered by the update. However, after reflashing the dev ROM (to both "system" partitions) and re-installing supersu via app-stopre the device works again. Installation, i.e. replacing to dev ROMs "su" implementation, went smooth. Hope it will not break with the next OTA update. I mainly wanted to have root to remove unneeded system apps, but it might be a bit too much of a hassle after all. Maybe I should "unroot" the device (use the stable ROM) again anaway. -- Conclusion: supersu is still the best su!

Hi +Chainfire in this article you mention that the CF-Auto Root files have also been updated to reflect the recent changes to the SuperSU app. I have a Galaxy S4 model SPH-L720 on software version L720VPUFNG2; running android 4.4.2 and is on the Sprint Network. When checking you site: http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/, I have noticed that the root files available for the Sprint SPH-L720 is still the previous software version: L720VPUFNAE; I was wondering if the updated version L720VPUFNG2 is or can be flashed so that I can get root access to my Galaxy phone once again.

Please advice.

My Sprint SM-G900P just doesn't want to play nice with the CF-Auto Root method.  Tracked down the latest version from XDA-Developers Forum and your latest version from this site.  Odin says it works, but the phone just reboots into recovery mode and sits there.   If I yank the battery, it will boot up normally.  I'm waiting to see if anyone on XDA responds. I know this isn't the proper place for individual help, unless you guys can point me to the right articles, etc. -

These root files I used referenced the updated firmware for the SPH-L720 Sprint variant Galaxy S4, when I attempted to use those files, my phone bricked! Since I couldn't get my phone to work after attempting to re-install the samsung official stock firmware, I attempted with the CF-Auto-Root +Chainfire has on his list of CF-Auto-Root website. Again I apologize for doubting your work, your files actually worked and got my phone back operating again. CF-AUTOROOT does not work o the latest note 4 exynos firmmware...I get a constant boot loop. Any workaround?

Nikita Berger commented on 2014-12-30 at 07:05:

For those who are having problems updating to 4.4.4 use,Cyanogenmod 11 download to device and download to computer, turn adp mode on,ptp, and clockwork mod, backup root.Pick “ stable" rom mod for beginners, or for the developers use the nightly , don't forget your “debugging reports"...allow the the computer do the work, it should boot the device into twrp team recovery, beginners press reboot now, advanced users you know what to do....it should load up with a new load screen and it should update the system U.I. and firmware, thus same process is used for flashing but through the clockwork rom mod backup. Thank you.

Nikita Berger commented on 2014-12-30 at 07:07:

Then, after the cyanogen mod operating system finally is installed and you have set up supersu permissions correctly, you should be able to use cf-lumen to its fullest extent.

Hello ChainFire, I've had my device rooted with your SuperSU when I try to update it, I get the so much dreaded "binary needs updating" prompt.  Are you working on having a fix for this issue?

I would have manually fixed it however I'm running a lgms769 from metro pcs & it's impossible for me to get to my recovery menu to fix this issue, I've tried to manually access it & i've tried to access with reboot recovery apps.

When I tried to allow SuperSU update its binary via TWRP it re sets my whole phone & lose all my contacts.

Luckily I have back up of that.

Thank you for your good work

It would be extremely handy to be able to authorise a root requesting app after the event (probably the best way is to be able to select it from log view)

If you have clickjacking protection enabled it's quite easy for the request to time out before you can authorise - especially if there's a bluetooth keyboard active.

Dear chainfire l have rooted my bq aquaris E5 FHD with kingroot and superuser binaries are not able to be updated. What can I do? I want to use supersu like my other devices. I have the pro and root remains with updates.

Could you help me please?

THOMAS commented on 2015-05-29 at 09:53:

Chainfire...I made the mistake of installing KINGUSER on my LG G3/AT&TAndroid5.0.1 and uninstalling SUPERSU, now, when I uninstalled KINGUSER and reinstalled SUPERSU it fails to update the binaries, I reboot and try again, same thing. Installation failed. I used rootcheck and it tells me SUPERSU by Chainfire is the Superuser management app and it's version 2.45:SUPERSU. (i purchased your pro version on 1/24/13) I tried clearing cache and dalvik cache. Should I try to remove all odex files from /data/app and /system/app?? I've done it before, they're rebuilt when I reboot.

UPDATE 5-30-15

I finally got this to work. I found a link to D850-LG G3 AutoRecovery and it installed TWRP on the first try, so easy. So then I downloaded the latest BETA of SuperSu2.49 and flashed it through TWRP...rebooted, tapped SUPERSU and bingo...NO more dreaded "The SU Binary needs to be updated" any more. Ahhhhh....but one problem with the new SuperSU2.49, CLEAN MASTER is granted permissions but when I try to go to "PHONE BOST" and then Autostart manager and try to disable an app from starting, it sits there for a little bit saying "Granting...", toast msg says its authorized and then a pop up comes up and says "Failed to Grant Root" ... Cancel or Authorize now...but I checked again, it is already authorized. I'm thinking about downgrading back to SUPERSU2.45 or 2.46 to the stable version but for now I can live with that one little problem. Other than that, it seems to be working fine.

I try to root my Sony Xperia TX lt 29i. 100 times but it's not.... What should I do?

Freddie Drake commented on 2015-08-27 at 06:58:

Kingoroot one click. Make sure your setting in debug usb mode. Go to settings hit seven times on build number. It will make you a developer and set android into debug mode. Go to Facebook or tweeter search for kingoroot ?? . no one wants to tell you that because they want to sell you as many apps before you find it for free. It's not letting me update them

RM Hale commented on 2015-11-07 at 02:55:

Recently I installed SuperSu on my Kyocera Hydro Icon (has TWRP recovery on device)...  Upon opening SuperSu I was prompted to 'update binaries' and I selected the update button for CWM/TWRP.  Once selecting this button the phone did a reboot and upon the phone coming back on the little green icon man showed up with the turning gears and the update line flashes to about 1/2 inch and then quickly repeats this over and over and over...

Because of this my phone cannot ever boot completely up and does not allow me to boot into my recovery program because of the above problem...

I am urgently asking you provide me with some means of getting around this problem...

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
