As you have probably already heard, 500px is shutting down their API mid-June. 500 Firepaper was built around the 500px API, and this would thus spell the end for the app.

I had warned I would probably not have time to update 500 Firepaper before the API shutdown, but I found some spare hours and did it anyway. It is something I run on my daily driver phone so it had a little bit of priority :)

Instead of using images from 500px, the app now uses images posted to Reddit's /r/EarthPorn sub. It's the best I could do with my limited time. While undoubtedly some users used different image categories, the 500 Firepaper default with 500px was Natures and Landscapes, and I think most users just continued using that default, so this should be somewhat similar. (The category selection option itself is now removed)

During the development and life of this app my positive opinion of 500px has generally turned to a negative one, but one thing they did have was a community of talented photographers producing high quality imagery. While I do not mean to say anything negative about /r/EarthPorn, it is not a portfolio site, so the images are noticeably different in quality.

Everything seems to work for me, but I only did a quick walkthrough of the app's functionalities, so it's not inconceivable you will run into issues. At least this should provide a little bit of continuity for 500 Firepaper users, rather than the app instantly self-destructing come June 15th.

Note: I built this release with Eclipse, take that DroidCon UK '17 keynote speakers.

Thank you for the update. It's nice too see, that I can use your App further on.

One question though: Have you thought about adding support for https://unsplash.com/ ?

They have free pictures and a REST API

Chainfire commented on 2018-05-29 at 13:41:

+Tobias Genannt I have taken a (quick) look, but initially it looks to me like the number of fresh images daily in the categories of interest is rather low.

tristan stewart commented on 2018-05-29 at 13:55:

thanks for that last update to keep the program going a bit longer. not to sound ungrateful, but is the previous apk floating around anywhere so we can use the other categories until the impending api shut down?

Tim Wallace commented on 2018-05-29 at 14:19:

I have used only this app since I purchased it way back when. Sorry to hear that 500px became so hard to work with, from the first time you had issues with them and their splash on each image. I hope you will continue to look for and find a suitable replacement for quality images.

Jason Farrell commented on 2018-05-29 at 14:40:

A shame that 500px is walling off their garden now that they've gotten bigger and cockier, but that's how these cycles of greed usually go.

I've used your app for years, but now without the categories (and sometimes NSFW), I'll switch to using the presumably lighter Google Wallpaper app.

Thanks.

Sad to see 500px go away. This app and 500px have been on my daily driver forever. Thank you for all the years of goodness.

Stefan Quandt commented on 2018-05-29 at 20:15:

You may have noticed that the beautiful image slide shows of idling Google Chromecast devices ("Backdrop") relies on 500px since three years or longer, see https://iso.500px.com/tag/chromecast-backdrop/.

Will this also end in June?

Or which kind of API is this?

Could this source be tapped for an Android wallpaper app?

Or does Google have a deal with 500px to use 'their' images exclusively on Chromecast connected TVs but not on Android devices?

+Blade Evil not yet. This update is primarily so it doesn't completely and suddenly stop working. There may be other image sources in the future.

Marc Visconte commented on 2018-05-31 at 19:23:

There are other sources that may work (just a note for the far future).

After experiencing 500 Firepaper, I looked for something similar for my Win box and found John's Background Switcher (John's Adventures, https://johnsad.ventures/software/backgroundswitcher/).

I couldn't get this to pull from 500px over the company VPN, but I could get it to run against my large collection of 500px picture downloads, so the effect was similar, just always behind 500 Firepaper. And, I had to remember to copy and offload the file cache, if I wanted newer pictures.

I'm sure we can find additional sources when you have time to tinker.

John's page lists some additional sources. He also notes the upcoming API changes.

I'm guessing that he just created a list of sources, with specific API calls for each one. I doubt that he needed to accommodate device aspect ratios.

Question: Now that it will no longer BE "500", will the app name change? Firepaper++?

WN5PX? (Who Needs 500px)

CFWWPS (ChainFire's Wonderful WallPaper Switcher)?

?

Da ve commented on 2018-06-01 at 03:50:

There are a few subreddits I hope you'd consider adding in, like wallpapers, exposureporn, cityporn, architectureporn, infrastructureporn, roadporn, aerialporn, chinapics.

I'm biased towards cityscapes, for other buffs r/sfwpornnetwork has all the replacements for every 500 category.

I'm currently forced to make do with Muzei and reddit add-on, but I can't turn the saturation up and the pics are all off-center. It helps to be able to add whatever subreddits I want in Muzei, but it appears to display only the top photo. I miss beautiful 500firepaper Σ(っ゚Д゚;)っ

Chainfire commented on 2018-06-01 at 17:23:

+Da ve I'll give this a bit of time to see if Reddit bans the app for bandwidth over-use, if not, other subreddits are actually easy to add.

My server currently caches the Reddit data to make sure the app's users don't hammer the Reddit API, that is why there's currently no way to select a random subreddit, and future additions will be hardcoded.

I have grand ideas about how to finally make the original Firepaper app I always wanted (back to Android 2.x days) but I just don't have the spare time, and not enough people care about background apps to make it commercially viable (also for that lots of copyright issues come into play). Maybe some day!

As one example, you mention saturation, but imagine contrast control global, local, and tonal(!). Especially tonal contrast would vastly improve pretty much every Reddit image I see. I have no idea how tonal contrast algorithms work at this point, but at some point I'll find out :)

Stefan Quandt commented on 2018-06-02 at 15:43:

+Stefan Quandt Indeed, 500px did a deal with Google in 2015 and they advertised it as being "the first part of a broadening expansion of our community to Chromecast users outside of the web and mobile experience", see

I'd interprete the imminent shutdown of their public API a step in the opposite direction, against their community of photographers, customers and in the end against their own interests.

tOM Travelling commented on 2018-06-02 at 19:48:

+Chainfire Is it possible to add NASA photos? And another suggestion, choose which resolution to download depending on screen pixels. (BTW, most TVs have a smaller "viewport" than screen size, i think to restrict games)

tOM Travelling commented on 2018-06-02 at 19:51:

+Marc Visconte W10 has a good screensaver that changes photos on multiple monitors & many photos avbl from different windows themes, NASA, TheAtlantic - you do need to specify a directory. I've named mine "Wallpaper"

Marc Visconte commented on 2018-06-04 at 20:26:

+tOM Travelling Heh! Wallpaper! I wouldn't have through of that.

I have a couple of dirs dedicated Wallpapers, but my static one on the old machine is all DigitalBlasphemy wallpapers back from when I treated myself to a year's membership. I could pick any resolution, and picked a resolution for single and dual wallpapers for the work monitors I had.

Different year, different monitors, different machine, different OS, different policies... there's no dock for this laptop yet, so I'm limited to whatever the single screen is... all I know is, I can't see it well w/out glasses.

Oh wow! I just found out that they did NOT lock down the wallpaper dir on the current machine. I'm gonna be one happy camper, now.

Thanks for the motivation to check the current settings!

Now... find and xfer my wallpapers. It will be a multi-step process, because of what I can't connect to, but still... glorious eye-candy awaits. When they get a docking station in, I'll be swimming in graphics, and able to see documents, I hope.

Ikiam Paladines commented on 2018-06-05 at 15:41:

Nice work, but definitely the categories were very important in your app and the 500px quality, anyway I hope you can fix this on the future, have a nice day

Richard Gowans commented on 2018-06-08 at 15:14:

This totally works for me. I'm mostly interested in things that I won't feel awkward opening my phone to, and landscapes was generally a safe bet. So thank you for fixing it pre-crash! I'll keep using it as is, since I almost didn't even notice the change! ?

Marc Visconte commented on 2018-06-09 at 18:55:

+Richard Gowans Yep...

And that's the mistake of adding as many categories as you can, and having "Daydream" charging. Prop it up on the shelf behind you and sit down to work on the computer.

Nothing like having your wife walk past and then as "why are there boobs on your phone?"

One of the questions they use in psychological evaluations is "Do you receive external instructions, say, from television or radio?"

My favorite answer is: "Do you mean like... Stay Tuned! Do go away! Buy Now!"?

Reddit is a great source, but it would be nice if we could set wallpaper longer than 24 hours, maybe without limit. I understand that was a limitation from 500px, but I believe that Reddit haven't such issue.

Thank you for the greatest wallpaper app for android, anyway.

Chainfire commented on 2018-07-11 at 09:04:

+Cynthia Hensley I have no idea what happened but I don't think I've ever purposely helped anyone hack anyone else's devices, and I take such accusations quite seriously.

I have made a lot of security-related tools over the years and have written a lot of information on the subject. This can be used for good and bad. I know for a fact lives have been saved due to it.

If my tools and/or provided knowledge has been used to hack you then I can only offer you my sympathy, and you should get the appropriate divisions of law enforcement involved.

But keep in mind that the tools I make are just that: tools, and it is the wielder of those tools at fault. Would you fault the manufacturer of the hammer if someone hit you with one, or the manufacturer of the car if someone purposely drove into you?

As for the information I provide, these things are not exactly common knowledge, but they're not secret either. You can find most information in other places as well, and you can find people more knowledgeable than I am, heck if you put some effort in you can even discover parts of it by yourself.

(Additionally, some of the devices you list aren't even compatible with any of my stuff.)

I am sorry for your loss, but I had nothing to do with it. So I will ignore your statement on how I should be ashamed of myself. And a thread about a wallpaper changing app is hardly the place to discuss any of it. As such, I'm removing your earlier comments.
