So, 500 Firepaper saw an update today, delivering three much requested features: history browser, blur, and a way to donate.

First up is the history browser. A lot of people have asked to be able to review the images they have seen. So here it is. The biggest caveat is probably that it only shows you history starting this update. So no reviewing what you saw before updating to v1.50. That being said, personally I've just mostly given up on trying to keep track of all these beautiful images - because soon enough, the app will present you with an image that's just as beautiful!

Second up is blur (and oversaturate): I'm not sure I'll ever really understand why people would want to do this to the beautiful images from 500px, but as there have been literally hundreds of requests for this, here it is - random nondescript blobs with blurry edges for your enjoyment! Just crank both the blur and oversaturate sliders all the way up ...

Last but not least, there's now a way to donate. Or upgrade to Pro. Whatever you like to call it. It doesn't unlock any new features, all the features are there and fully operational regardless of you buying me a beer or not. The only real difference is that if you haven't donated, the app will ask you to every time you open the UI. If that's too annoying let me know, I'll reduce the frequency in a future update if enough people have issues with it.

Changelog

  • Added history browser

  • Added blur option

  • Added oversaturate option

  • Added setup wizard

  • Added donation

  • Fixed another black bar issue

  • Fixed some spelling errors

  • Current image now survives restarts (rotation on some launchers, reboot)

  • Parallax disabled by default

Oh, so you did BLUR! Amazing, thank you SO much!

Has the issue with 80+ mb app data storage been fixed?

I am constantly running under ~250MB free app space these days and apps start refusing to install, it reminds me of the old days I was using HTC Desire and I had just 100MB for apps... I could only have a handful of apps installed...

Chainfire commented on 2013-12-14 at 00:21:

+Apostol Apostolov That's not an issue - that's by design. It'll use up to 250mb of storage space.

Karan Rajpal commented on 2013-12-14 at 00:26:

Awesome! The blur is what I always wanted :-D hey, if you don't mind, could you reduce the donation reminder frequency? To about twice a day maybe? That'd be fair I guess.

Aaron Gascoigne commented on 2013-12-14 at 00:26:

+Chainfire is the blur done in renderscript?

Apostol Apostolov commented on 2013-12-14 at 00:32:

+Chainfire Okay, understood, however can I please request a way to limit amount of storage used for images? I hate to use Titanium Backup to wipe data every time I need to install apps since it eats (as you said) 1/8 of my phone's 2 Gb for apps.

Chainfire commented on 2013-12-14 at 00:32:

+Karan Rajpal Why are you even opening the app more than once a day? I'm genuinely interested here. On most of my devices it just runs, and I maybe open the app UI once a week?

Chainfire commented on 2013-12-14 at 00:34:

+Aaron Gascoigne No. I'm not really up to speed on RS and I wasn't in the mood to learn. The RS libs actually do come with a pre-made blur method, but the maximum radius was factors(!) too small for the intended effect, and repeating the procedure got really slow. So I just used some C code instead, which works fine and pretty fast (though its pretty resource-hungry)

Karan Rajpal commented on 2013-12-14 at 00:35:

+Chainfire well basically to change the blur depending on certain wallpapers. Some I like to be a little more blurry and some a little less. Honestly, I don't think it's that annoying. Leave it as it is. I was gonna donate next month anyway.

Love this app, I keep checking the wallpaper to what new image is there, and my phone never feels old as it's a new picture every time.

This is the best wallpaper app I have ever had...two thumbs up!

Darryl Kirby commented on 2013-12-14 at 13:11:

+Oliver Spörri check the faqs

Va no commented on 2013-12-14 at 22:04:

Absolutely a must have app on android phone after SuperSU!

There only three issues that don't make it perfect:

1 percentage sliders din't show the numbers until you hit ok, very inconvenient, hard to be precised

2 new blur only works at 6% and higher

3 we allowed donate only once and ridiculously low amount. Either allow us change the amount manualy or allow us donate more then once.

Alessandro Fosi commented on 2013-12-14 at 22:59:

+Chainfire It would be nice if i could set a wallpaper pic from chronology and not only looking at  it. Did i miss something ?

However great job!  5 stars!

Jason Yu commented on 2013-12-15 at 02:25:

I use my phone with mobile data a lot of the time, can the update timer be paused when there is no wifi?

I always have the black screen saying no wifi connection.

Jason Yu commented on 2013-12-15 at 02:28:

Or maybe just showing random pic from the past history

Chainfire commented on 2013-12-15 at 09:51:

+Alessandro Fosi no this is not possible, in the same way that its not possible to set the currently shown image as wallpaper for a longer time. Read the FAQ.

+Jason Yu No, read the FAQ.

Jason Yu commented on 2013-12-15 at 10:14:

+Chainfire what about just don't trigger the update and keep the current pic rather than changing to the black wall with the white text when there is no wiring or cannot update the pic?

I rather wait for longer in the same pic rather than change it to a black one.

Chainfire commented on 2013-12-15 at 16:40:

+Jason Yu Honestly, which part do you not understand? Due to 500px terms and conditions it cannot keep the images around longer than 24 hours. If the black screen occurs, that means there are no more images in the cache - all of them have been removed because they've been sitting on the device for 24 hours. It is not that complicated! You should have picked this up from the FAQ I told you to read two comments up.

Va no commented on 2013-12-15 at 16:51:

Is there a way fall back to default wallpaper picture on phone instead of black screen? I had same issue even after switching to update via data connection and had to clear cache to fix it.

Jason Yu commented on 2013-12-15 at 16:56:

+Chainfire I did read the FAQ and I miss the point that them have to be removed after sitting on the device for 24 hours.

But I just install it less than 24 hours but like only a few hours, and I already get the black screen all the time, is that normal?

Va no commented on 2013-12-15 at 17:06:

+Jason Yu I forgot to mention in my previous comment that I had same issue after few hours turning wifi off. Must be a bug.

I don't know what is the logic behind how new images being downloaded and how many at one time, does it check how many of them expired and download as many, or just one? Does it do clean up on the background when screen is off?

Jason Yu commented on 2013-12-15 at 17:14:

This is the first day of trying this and when there is wifi connection, at home or office, and I set the interval to 5 min, there are half of the time when I turn on my phone and it is having the black background. And when I am in mobile data only, 100% of the time is black screen.

I don't think it is normal that the picture can't even hold 1 hours. Not to mention 24 hours.

I think it is because no matter what the update interval is, when it update it will check if I am in wifi connection, if not, black screen and else it will download a new picture. This is my logic after using this for the 1st day.

Byron B commented on 2013-12-15 at 18:00:

+Chainfire can you get this app to work with logitech revue please thanks. I also paid for the app. Keep up the great work.

Alessandro Fosi commented on 2013-12-15 at 18:20:

Ok thank you +Chainfire

Indresh Kumar commented on 2013-12-16 at 07:40:

Wish custom searches for categories was an option

Matthew Becker commented on 2013-12-16 at 23:57:

+Chainfire would it be possible to change the finger combinations for next image? HTC use the 3 finger tap for media output.

Aaron Rickle commented on 2013-12-17 at 21:51:

Great app. I also have some black screen issues. When running daydream (refresh every two minutes) through Wi-Fi and charging on my Nexus 5, I occasionally get black screens saying to be on Wi-Fi with half charge battery. Happens at least once every ten minutes. I wish it was consistent :\ if I triple tap to go to a next image I usually get a new one.

Aaron Rickle commented on 2013-12-17 at 23:16:

Testing further, it looks like the app is having some kind of trouble rendering certain images. I managed to start scrolling through all of my cached images again, and certain images, though they exist in the history, do not show as wallpaper . I always get a black screen for them. I eventually got to the point where every single new image I would download would render as the black screen, but when I checked the history there were tons of new images I never got to see. And no it isn't the 24 hour expiration. These images are downloaded and then immediately fail to render as a wallpaper :(

Aaron Rickle commented on 2013-12-17 at 23:19:

Also I apologize if this is a known issue, as possibly referenced by: "Fixed (one) possible issue where image will not refresh"

劉晉綸 commented on 2013-12-20 at 09:14:

Awesome! BTW, I hope i can set the maximum storage of the App that used for saving photos.

Joaquin Montenegro commented on 2014-01-08 at 04:04:

It's possible to add profile (or group) support to easy change (and save) categories and switch from work (appropiate collections), to home (less appropiate collections)?

Neil Chandler commented on 2014-01-08 at 21:21:

Is it possible to automatically resize the images so they fit on the screen properly on a galaxy s2?

David Poole commented on 2014-01-17 at 14:40:

Is the app meant to clear the cache after a while or is it a manual job? Currently sitting at 500mb.

This is amazing! How did I live without it?  Thanks CF!
