On Lollipop, SuperSU, and CF-Auto-Roots

A lot of Lollipop firmwares dropped the past few days, and so did a number of new CF-Auto-Roots.

Android 5.0 compatible CFARs are now available for the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 2012, Nexus 7 2013, Nexus 9, and Nexus 10, amongst others.

Note that the Android version a CFAR is based on, as listed on the page, is not necessarily relevant to which Android version it will work on. This is listed only because often new bootloaders will not boot kernels based on older firmwares.

Normally I batch update all CFARs with the new patches, but since there have been so much changes to make CFAR 5.0 compatible, I still want to test it out on some more devices as their 5.0 firmwares roll out, before converting all CFARs to the new system.

While the old CFARs actually had their own scripts to install SuperSU, the new variants actually have the same ZIP embedded as you would flash using TWRP.

A second ZIP will also be flashed, which if running on a Lollipop or newer firmware, will take the current kernel, patch it so SuperSU can run at boot, and flashes it back. This makes the process mostly kernel agnostic, but it does require the kernel to be in a compatible format. If not, you will have to turn to your favorite kernel devs to get a root compatible kernel from them. Locked bootloader users are out of luck (for now).

In time, those two ZIPs will probably be merged, but not until some more testing has been done.

While at this moment CFARs come with v2.20 of SuperSU which is not available anywhere else, this is an interim version and doesn't bring anything new over v2.19 other than CFAR compatibility. A newer ZIP will be available to everyone within a few days, and so will the automatic kernel patcher.

I will also start updating the How-To SU docs with Android 5.0 related information for developers as soon as possible.

In the meantime, my devbox has suffered both a cooling pump failure (deadish h100i) so my CPU is throttled, and a drive failure so my RAID arrays are rebuilding (no data was lost), so everything is slow going at the moment...

+Chainfire

"The lesson here is that consumers should stick to buying products with unlockable bootloaders if they care about rooting. As SELinux, Knox, and Android itself continue to close up the holes that hackers might use to violate our devices, they are also making it increasingly difficult to root. Ultimately, we want the best security possible, but some people find that there are still certain things that can't be done within the confines of an unrooted device. Now that it may only be possible to root by modifying the kernel, it seems that unlocking a device will be a requirement going forward"

Best place I've found in the online dell auctions you know when big companies buy like 4cpu servers raid etc they pay extra for Dell to keep 1/2 spare parts for everything you bought after extended care expires the companies are offered the spares to hold onto in case. Rest go to auctions. I know greysonline.com.au do Australia, couple years ago got a duel xeon server then 2nd cpu for it for $127 dell and ibm still had the cpu listed for $1200 also cheap as monitors

Daniel Galvan commented on 2014-11-13 at 22:39:

Ok so I got the official Android 5.0 update. Do I update first or flash the new zip file first? I'm already rooted running PA

Daniel Galvan commented on 2014-11-13 at 22:45:

+Paul De la Pomélie do you update to 5.0 first? I use twrp but I'm not sure if it will still be there.

Billy Reynolds commented on 2014-11-13 at 23:23:

+Daniel Galvan

It won't, the official image includes a stock recovery partition, you'll need to flash TWRP again. You could flash the individual partitions but it's a pain, best to flash the whole thing then re-install your favourite recovery.

Daniel Galvan commented on 2014-11-13 at 23:29:

+Billy Reynolds Ok so I update, then flash the zip file by holding both volume rockers and power button correct? This will root the phone and then I can install twrp.

Billy Reynolds commented on 2014-11-13 at 23:34:

There's no proper root for this yet but you don't need root to install a recovery partition, you do that using fastboot:

http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/129

Use the "Download - Recovery Image Method:

" method.

Chainfire will most likely come out with a CF-Autoroot for the N4 in the next few days, he's done it with the other devices.

Daniel Galvan commented on 2014-11-13 at 23:38:

Thanks man

Billy Reynolds commented on 2014-11-13 at 23:46:

No problem, +Syko Pompos on the XDA forum says that flashing the boot image from his preview build may allow rooting, Apparently people have done the same with the Nexus 5 version and it worked.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56733268&postcount=30758

Billy Reynolds commented on 2014-11-14 at 00:02:

Apparently this flashable boot image will allow root using SuperSu 2.19:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56733496&postcount=30762

So just install Lollipop, use fastboot to install the TWRP above, reboot into recovery, flash the boot image, reboot again and then you should be able to flash SuperSu 2.19 (or whatever ones come after)

Richard Bellingham commented on 2014-11-14 at 15:46:

A pleasant surprise; the Three "inTouch" wifi calling app that previously wouldn't work with my rooted phone is working on my Nexus 5 with Lollipop, SuperSU 2.19 and the kernel supplied by Chainfire.

Does anyone know why this would now work? Is it a general thing that apps will find it harder to check for root on Lollipop with the modified kernel, or is it a matter of Three's checks for root not working for now but likely to catch up in the future? I'm glad it's working, but I'm curious as to why!

Thanks for doing a wonderful job!

Read all the comnents, have a question though: in ES File Explorer, Root Explorer test fails, saying "This feature cannot run on your device." Is this root related or app related? Device is Nexus 4 running factory image.

Anyone?

I recently rooted my Samsung Note 3 Neo with your Odin kit and am wondering when it will be safe to upgrade to Lolipop?

Mark Bennison commented on 2014-11-23 at 12:20:

On update to Lollipop I lost root  on my Nexus 5 (I had supersu pro with the survival mode enabled but hey...). Used the latest auto-root which claimed to work but on reboot I got the "no binary installed" message. After a bit of googling I came across a post that recommended wiping the cache from recovery mode, rather than from the settings. To do this hold down volume up and down and the power button when turned off, then select recovery mode which will show an android on its back with the message 'no command'. Then press power and volume up at the same time and let go. You'll get a menu from which you can select wipe cache: select it and wait - it takes a long time. Then reboot and follow the instructions for auto root (get back to the bootloader). I noticed that the 'red android' screen showed more information this time. After the reboot root was back! Only issue now is with not being able to press the grant/deny buttons in supersu but I can work around that with setting the default to grant all. Anyway, hope this is useful to anyone having the same issue as I was with their Nexus 5.

Try downloading unified Android toolkit by skipsoft. You may have to donate

to get the pro module for your model, but it's well worth the 6 or 7 bucks.

And it works on almost any Android device
