A lot of Lollipop firmwares dropped the past few days, and so did a number of new CF-Auto-Roots.
Android 5.0 compatible CFARs are now available for the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 2012, Nexus 7 2013, Nexus 9, and Nexus 10, amongst others.
Note that the Android version a CFAR is based on, as listed on the page, is not necessarily relevant to which Android version it will work on. This is listed only because often new bootloaders will not boot kernels based on older firmwares.
Normally I batch update all CFARs with the new patches, but since there have been so much changes to make CFAR 5.0 compatible, I still want to test it out on some more devices as their 5.0 firmwares roll out, before converting all CFARs to the new system.
While the old CFARs actually had their own scripts to install SuperSU, the new variants actually have the same ZIP embedded as you would flash using TWRP.
A second ZIP will also be flashed, which if running on a Lollipop or newer firmware, will take the current kernel, patch it so SuperSU can run at boot, and flashes it back. This makes the process mostly kernel agnostic, but it does require the kernel to be in a compatible format. If not, you will have to turn to your favorite kernel devs to get a root compatible kernel from them. Locked bootloader users are out of luck (for now).
In time, those two ZIPs will probably be merged, but not until some more testing has been done.
While at this moment CFARs come with v2.20 of SuperSU which is not available anywhere else, this is an interim version and doesn't bring anything new over v2.19 other than CFAR compatibility. A newer ZIP will be available to everyone within a few days, and so will the automatic kernel patcher.
I will also start updating the How-To SU docs with Android 5.0 related information for developers as soon as possible.
In the meantime, my devbox has suffered both a cooling pump failure (deadish h100i) so my CPU is throttled, and a drive failure so my RAID arrays are rebuilding (no data was lost), so everything is slow going at the moment...
Thank you so much for your work cf
Thank you so much! :-)
Goed werk, zoals altijd! Bedankt. En succes met de kapotte hardware.
Thanks for your work XD
+Chainfire any chance we can add the code to source that supersu is available only in settings? On 4.4.4 it works, but some files changed in 5.0.
Thx for the information and your work.
Woot woot!!!
Great work there +Chainfire ! Thanks a million!!!!
Than you for moving so quick love your work
Thanks for the work guys !
Not working
Just successfully rooted my N7 2012 running 5.0 with the latest version of CF. Worked like a charm! Thank you!
Bought you a beer yesterday because of the Moto X autoroot. Cheers :)
+Chainfire can u help please....I'm stuck in bootloops
Hope you have offsite backups.
Yes, I also bought Pro. Good work all around.
I rooted just by flashing elemental x 3.01 and then flashing super su beta 2.17
Thank you, sir!
Спасибо!!!
Thanks for all your work :)
+Amanpreet Wadhwa use Faltboot and flash the original boot.img back. Had the same problem
it says waiting on device..
+thomas norimaki I did that but I need to root
+Brad Himself Your device probably isn't in fastboot mode.
+Amanpreet Wadhwa? For flashing bootloader you just need too unlock the bootloader...
+Chainfire Says " then run the included script for your OS" what is the exact adb command for that? and do i have to unzip the file to platform-tools first? Sorry I am new at adb
+Angel Vega where did you get that elementalx version?
thx
+Angel Vega hey mate I only see ElementalX 2.03 not 3.01... am I missing something??
I have a att unlocked note 3 how do I update my firmware??? Please help
+Grant Rees it is..in bootloader mode.
Gracias!
"The lesson here is that consumers should stick to buying products with unlockable bootloaders if they care about rooting. As SELinux, Knox, and Android itself continue to close up the holes that hackers might use to violate our devices, they are also making it increasingly difficult to root. Ultimately, we want the best security possible, but some people find that there are still certain things that can't be done within the confines of an unrooted device. Now that it may only be possible to root by modifying the kernel, it seems that unlocking a device will be a requirement going forward"
I have an oppo n1..what do u have to say?
+Chainfire Does CF-Auto-Root still erase data when encrypted? With Android Lollipop being encrypted by default, this would be useful to know...
Cheers chainy. Great work !
do i have to type a command in the terminal or na?
+Mike Libbey unpack the zip, put the phone in fast boot mode, go to were you unpacked the zip and run the flash file.
Legendary
Thanks! :D
Thank you
You are awesome!
Thank you +Chainfire. All these years later, you still are doing your thing, expertly!
You are a boss The devices
+Mario Stadlhuber do you have a custom recovery? Flash elementalx then SuperSU then you'll have root.
+Chainfire with your raid dying and other bits. Best place I've found in the online dell auctions you know when big companies buy like 4cpu servers raid etc they pay extra for Dell to keep 1/2 spare parts for everything you bought after extended care expires the companies are offered the spares to hold onto in case. Rest go to auctions. I know greysonline.com.au do Australia, couple years ago got a duel xeon server then 2nd cpu for it for $127 dell and ibm still had the cpu listed for $1200 also cheap as monitors
+Russell Lowe thanks!!
Thank you +Chainfire for all the work and info! Most appreciated.
Doing the lord's work. Thank you Chainfire for everything you have done for the community
Thank you!
your work is well appreciated, +Chainfire !
Thanks for your all hard work man. Android community is in debt to you.
This is only work for non rooted device
Already rooted On my 5.0
Is this only if you want to root your device right?
Ya only root
+Shiv Sagar thanks man.??
+Orvenzon Quiros ensure ur boot loader is unlocked . if flashing on nexus . else whole unlocking u will lose all ur data . so better take a back up before doing anything
+Orvenzon Quiros ur welcome ')
Thanks Brother/Sister CF, you have explained this in such a clear and concise manner that it puts everyone of your followers at ease, you know what you know and that my friend is what is most important now a days when we not so technology fortunate brothers and sisters, need that extra bit of emergent info when we need it, so, again, thanks for your knowledge, I know it is very much appreciated from all......
Thank you +Chainfire it works perfectly
Yeah, works great - Nexus 10 official release firmware.
+Shiv Sagar I'm already rooted N5-5.0... Do I had to re-root again..
+Orvenzon Quiros didn't catch u ?? What u mean bro?
Thanks! Donate hit.
+Shiv Sagar my Nexus 5 is already rooted.. Running AOSP Android5.0 r5..do I have to run this application again?
No if ur rooted y do ubwanna run the root again??
guys i need your help. after installing the factory image i now have rooted my N5 with cfar and it looks good, but sadly its not working. supersu starts and looks normal and if i start a app that needs root, eg ti backup, i get the message to allow ti root access, i accept it but after that ti tells me that i couldnt get root access. supersu has ti in his list, so what could i do?
+Birol Cin how did u root it? Boot loader in that mode did u run the files of cf auto root ?
+Shiv Sagar my (unlocked) N5 was in fastboot and i started the cf auto root file, i was also able to see the red android so i thought everyhting was good...
I hope this small donation will help you towards replacing your rig, or getting a beer or two to forget about it =)
Keep up the great work, you make our lives better everyday!
Worked fine on my Nexus 5 official build, good job !
+Shiv Sagar i tried it again, after a complete unroot via supersu app and looked at the message auto root showed me and there the step with the kernel patcher shows me "failure or patch not needed"?
Good to hear that you're working in the root mehods and beyond. and thank you.
+Birol Cin I have the same problem. When I first time root it, it worked. But I try to reflash the factory image and root it again, it gives me "failure or patch not needed" and supersu is not working. Please help us !
Thank you
Thank you...the Nexus 7 2012 works like a charm.
+Mario Stadlhuber no prob buddy. I ran into the same situation yesterday.
Ok so I got the official Android 5.0 update. Do I update first or flash the new zip file first? I'm already rooted running PA
+Paul De la Pomélie do you update to 5.0 first? I use twrp but I'm not sure if it will still be there.
It won't, the official image includes a stock recovery partition, you'll need to flash TWRP again. You could flash the individual partitions but it's a pain, best to flash the whole thing then re-install your favourite recovery.
+Billy Reynolds Ok so I update, then flash the zip file by holding both volume rockers and power button correct? This will root the phone and then I can install twrp.
There's no proper root for this yet but you don't need root to install a recovery partition, you do that using fastboot:
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/129
Use the "Download - Recovery Image Method:
" method.
Chainfire will most likely come out with a CF-Autoroot for the N4 in the next few days, he's done it with the other devices.
Thanks man
No problem, +Syko Pompos on the XDA forum says that flashing the boot image from his preview build may allow rooting, Apparently people have done the same with the Nexus 5 version and it worked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56733268&postcount=30758
Apparently this flashable boot image will allow root using SuperSu 2.19:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56733496&postcount=30762
So just install Lollipop, use fastboot to install the TWRP above, reboot into recovery, flash the boot image, reboot again and then you should be able to flash SuperSu 2.19 (or whatever ones come after)
Worked great on my Nexus 5. Thank you.
Root and chainfire have become a synonym in Android world through your work. Thanks, keep it up.
Good job, thank you.
Instead of saying, "root your phone" it should be, "chainfire your phone!" Amazing as always!
+Birol Cin there is a test5 build of TI available for android 5.0, do a google search its a twitter link, the test build of Titanium backup works beautifully
thank you so much
Hello. Can you please make a cf auto root for SM-N910CQ as well? It'll be my first root so I'm quite excited about it.
Thank you!
Thank you for your work, super easy to implement.
A pleasant surprise; the Three "inTouch" wifi calling app that previously wouldn't work with my rooted phone is working on my Nexus 5 with Lollipop, SuperSU 2.19 and the kernel supplied by Chainfire.
Does anyone know why this would now work? Is it a general thing that apps will find it harder to check for root on Lollipop with the modified kernel, or is it a matter of Three's checks for root not working for now but likely to catch up in the future? I'm glad it's working, but I'm curious as to why!
+Chainfire If you had the opportunity to respond that would be great. =)
Thx for the work chainfire you rock...
+An Orrible Monster agree
+Brandon Giesing Did you get a response from +Chainfire ? That would be great to know.
+Jeff Mitchell Nope...
Awesome. Just simply downright awesome work that you do. Thanks.
+Chainfire hello, nexus4 lollipop image released, could i look forward to autoroot for nexus4 ? :) thanks for your great work
N4 imges are live now, but please, give to Chainfire time at least for download and make the magic...
Does this work on latest factory image for N4? can someone pls confirm (test)
It will works, when it will be ready ! Last CF-Auto-Root is : LGE > Nexus 4 > occam > mako > msm8960 > KTU84P > 4.4.4
Nexus 4 Lollipop kernel?
CF-Auto-Root is : LGE > Nexus 4 > occam > mako > msm8960 > KTU84P > 4.4.4
It works https://plus.google.com/104632150451317256345/posts/iqmfxCecA84
You rock. Got root on my n10. I don't get prompted for root, had to default to allow. Also, su crashes a lot... I've already submitted the bug report.
Man I'm holding my Nexus 4 and I'm counting on you. I'd buy you a beer !
Thanks for your work man !
The Nexus4 CFAR has been 5.0 compatible since before Google put the image up. As clearly stated on the page, the Android version listed is for reference and has no relation to which Android versions it can root. Imagine if people would actually read...
+Chainfire i actually read it ! XD lol!
download is a bit slow! y?
When will you release SuperSU for the Nexus 4 running Lollipop? Or is it already released?
+Chainfire you're simple the best! thx for n4 autorooter
+Chainfire thank's a lot for N4 Autorooter, you're the best!
CFAR worked on both my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2012). Thank you very much for creating these, SuperSU, etc. Donation willing given. You earned it!
:-)
Thanks for nexus4 rooting.?
Thanks a lot of
+Sven Scholz What did you do to root it?
I used CF autoroot, definetly soon as you unlock the bootloader (or was unlocked from before). See above.
Oh and I forgot. Everything we did from ubuntu 14.04, where it is not necessary to deal with drivers for nexus devices as an windows.
+Petr Matula I have the drivers, so nothing to worry about here. I mean what did you do exactly? I mean the fastboot commands and stuff.
The bootloader is unlocked on mine.
+Calvin H. For german I found a howto. I think in english its also easy to find something at Google. :)
You are the one

+Marnix Bassie ES file Explorer released an update yesterday which fixes this... Get the update
+Clayshorn Ollivierre Yes, tnx. Got it yesterday already. Worked ofcourse.
ok cool...on another note does anyone know where i can get the stock kernel as well as the stock recovery separately for Lollipop?
I recently rooted my Samsung Note 3 Neo with your Odin kit and am wondering when it will be safe to upgrade to Lolipop?
On update to Lollipop I lost root on my Nexus 5 (I had supersu pro with the survival mode enabled but hey...). Used the latest auto-root which claimed to work but on reboot I got the "no binary installed" message. After a bit of googling I came across a post that recommended wiping the cache from recovery mode, rather than from the settings. To do this hold down volume up and down and the power button when turned off, then select recovery mode which will show an android on its back with the message 'no command'. Then press power and volume up at the same time and let go. You'll get a menu from which you can select wipe cache: select it and wait - it takes a long time. Then reboot and follow the instructions for auto root (get back to the bootloader). I noticed that the 'red android' screen showed more information this time. After the reboot root was back! Only issue now is with not being able to press the grant/deny buttons in supersu but I can work around that with setting the default to grant all. Anyway, hope this is useful to anyone having the same issue as I was with their Nexus 5.
Unlock samsung s5 please
