SuperSU v2.27 BETA - no more kernel patches?

NOTICE: This content was originally posted to Google+, then imported here. Some formatting may be lost, links may be dead, and images may be missing.

This new beta may be doing away with the previously needed kernel patches on Lollipop.

I should warn you however that this method is more invasive, and has a higher chance of bootloops. Probably the highest-bootloop-risk beta in quite a while. Please make sure you have a backup before flashing it. In case of bootloops, reflash the system partition.

If you've previously rooted, keeping the old patched kernel will do no harm, but it will also not properly test this beta. I suggest you flash back your device's stock kernel.

Remember that I rely on all you enthusiasts to test and report back issues. I prefer the reports in the BETA thread on XDA rather than over here, but I will read them here as well. Please include your device, firmware details, stock or patched kernel, and the problem in detail, when you report something.

XDA has some background details in their portal article, for those interested in that sort of thing: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/supersu-beta-lollipop-root-stock-kernel/

SuperSU BETA thread on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133

Again, official docs are coming in the next few days. Let's get this all fixed and tested first, though!

Thanks a lot. and congrats on 200k followers

Hans-Georg Michna commented on 2014-11-20 at 15:27:

How about letting SuperSU detect boot loops and taking preventive action after a boot loop is detected, like trying different strategies?

Todd Yates commented on 2014-11-20 at 15:27:

The XDA article seems to be missing, can we read about it anywhere else?

Chainfire commented on 2014-11-20 at 15:33:

+Todd Yates check again... timing things across sites to the exact second is difficult, you know.

r k commented on 2014-11-20 at 15:39:

Just for the record, installed the stable version via the autorooter on N4 and N10 (both on Lollipop), works like a charm. I just don't get what's all that kernel patch fuss about.

Haris Huntic commented on 2014-11-20 at 15:47:

2.27 doesn't clear log

Carlos Rodríguez commented on 2014-11-20 at 15:48:

+rk fg The autorooter patches the kernel. +Chainfire intends to make a zip (he succeded) to avoid this and therefore it would work with devices with locked bootloader.

r k commented on 2014-11-20 at 15:49:

+Carlos Rodríguez Oh, thanks. Didn't know about that and didn't even know it's possible without recompiling.

Carlos Rodríguez commented on 2014-11-20 at 15:50:

+Chainfire aparently, everything works fine with 2.27. I flashed the stock boot.img and then booted to TWRP (when I'm on stock I don't flash a custom recovery, I just boot to it to flash SuperSU) and flashed 2.27. Wakelock detector and other root apps work.

r k commented on 2014-11-20 at 15:58:

Oh, so wakelock detector is broken because of this and the issue was fixed! I forgot about it, really. My other root apps work fine though, except WLD. Many thanks again.

王权 commented on 2014-11-20 at 16:04:

It works!I just flashed boot.img via fastboot, and after reboot I opened SuperSU to make sure I truly flash stock kernel. After that I flash 2.27 via TWRP,and it works!

Ted Fishman commented on 2014-11-20 at 16:24:

Will this change allow post 5.0 OTAs to pass modification checks so that OTAs could be sideloaded like in 4.x?

Aaron Gascoigne commented on 2014-11-20 at 16:27:

+Ted Fishman, no 5.0 uses a block level update so if your system partition isn't exactly as it shipped. Flashing otas will fail.

Nicholas Daniels commented on 2014-11-20 at 16:29:

Works perfect here, stock kernel + non-rooted to stock kernel + rooted

Ted Fishman commented on 2014-11-20 at 16:29:

+Aaron Gascoigne So you'll have to first reflash system partition as the easiest method?

Aaron Gascoigne commented on 2014-11-20 at 16:43:

+Ted Fishman on a stock device using verified block level updates. Yes reflashing the system partition assuming you had an unlocked bootloader would be the easiest way.

Sorry for my ignorance: I have updated from Nexus 4 Lollipop stock + root SuperSU 2.19 using NRT. After that, I have updated to SuperSU 2.23 Beta using de APK, (AutomateIt Pro root tasks still doesn't work), after then, update to 2.25 Beta in the same way (APK), and AutomateIt works fine now with root tasks as enable or dissable airplane mode. It is safe to update do 2.27 using the same method (APK)? I am not sure reading the heading of this post.... Thanks.

Hi ChainFire,

I rooted my N4 with Lollipop using NRT.

So now I have a modified kernel and I'm running SuperSU Pro 2.19.

What is the best way to update?

I think it is:

  1. update SuperSU to 2.27 using TWRP

  2. flash stock kernel

Is it ok?

+Ray Darbin did you try to reflash the noforceencrypt_boot.img after CFAR, then factory reset in bootloader (fastboot format userdata)? My path was oem unlock, back to bootloader, flash noforceencrypt, reboot bootloader, format userdata, boot to OS, back to bootloader, flash twrp, flash CFAR. Win! (iirc)

Mark Williams commented on 2014-11-23 at 04:37:

Good luck!

Mark Williams commented on 2014-11-23 at 04:52:

No, 2.23. But you have to factory reset after flashing the noforceencrypt img, prior to booting the device into android

Mark Williams commented on 2014-11-23 at 04:58:

+Ray Darbin the thought was, if this version doesn't modify the kernel you can gain root, then unencrypt with the other script after installing
