500 Firepaper breaks up with 500px

I've just uploaded v2.70 to the Play Store, which removes the 500px-supported upgrade to allow pinning for 7 days.

500 Firepaper to me has been one of those apps that was fun to build and I actually used daily myself. Every Android device I use runs it as its background.

It used to be optionally-donate, as in, all features were free and you could buy Pro to buy me a beer. About 1.5 years ago, the guys at 500px let me know they wanted half the 'revenue'. In exchange, they would allow paying users to keep images cached (and pinned) for 7 days instead of 24 hours. Fair enough, they're providing the bandwidth, after all.

About half a year ago, 500px started to watermark 'their' images. According to their own documents, you can get a watermark-free stream of images for a fee. Of course, I immediately started lobbying to have those watermarks removed for images shown in 500 Firepaper - if not for all users, then at least for paying users.

I'll be the first to admit that earlier this year, some of my payments to 500px were late and batched together - my bad. They made some comments about that, so I started making sure the payment were done within the terms of the contract. Terms that were negotiated at length when it was signed, and now apparently forgotten.

They have become first unreasonable (and they're Canadian...) then completely unresponsive. After months of this, it is clear to me that they have no intention to either work anything out, or remove the watermarks, even for users they have received revenue shares from.

To me this is completely unacceptable. I cannot justify taking user's money and giving it to 500px, while at the same time 500px presents those same users with watermarked images that go a long way to ruin the experience.

As such, I am no longer making payments to 500px, and have removed the paid functionalities from the app. It is now once again an optionally-donate app, with all features available for free.

Pinning for 7 days will still be available for users who purchased when that feature was offered, for anyone else it will be limited to 24 hour cache time limit.

Note that I fully expect this is the beginning of the end for 500 Firepaper. It wouldn't surprise me if they just disabled the app's API key out of spite. I'm sure they don't agree with me keeping the 7-days-pinning feature available for those who have paid in the past either.

Last but not least, it has happened several times in the lifetime of 500 Firepaper that the app's API key was disabled by a photographer's request. Photographs uploaded to 500px are spread through the API for public consumption (with cache time limits). It seems a large number of photographers aren't aware of this happening, and just see their photos appearing somewhere - to their logic without their permission. Of course, they have granted 500px permission to do this when they signed up, but not realising this, they file complaints. If that happens again, I fear the API key will never be reinstated.

That's it, enjoy it while it lasts.

Sorry to hear about 500px becoming more unreasonable, and about the bogus copyright takedowns by overzealous photogs. Had no idea.

I've been using 500 Firepaper on all my devices since it was first released a few years ago, and would be sad to see it go. To be honest, though, I never really noticed the light watermark in the lower-left corner until you mentioned it (added 6-months ago - really?), AND, and I can't recall ever pinning anything because I rather enjoy having a NEW awesome background image every couple hours.

GL & thanks,

J

Hans-Georg Michna commented on 2015-12-03 at 12:52:

How about accepting user-supplied photos, then letting all other users vote on them to find the most popular ones?

This idea could be spun much further. Users could set a rating limit to get only the best photos displayed (except that they would still get a few new ones from time to time for some first ratings). The photographer could have his name shown. Users could ask for a full-resolution image. Photographers could set a price, zero or higher, and ask for acknowledgement if their photos are published elsewhere.

I agree with +Mauro Luyten. Though there is an app called Wallsplash, but it's functionality is totally different. Unsplash is imo, the best source of high quality wallpapers which are free to use anywhere. Maybe you can take some time from your schedule, and look at it.

Chainfire commented on 2015-12-03 at 13:47:

To clarify, it isn't entirely their fault, nor it is entirely my fault. Things just went belly up. I blame them for some parts, I blame me for some parts.

However, the 500px API is so ingrained into the app, that switching providers is not something that I would quickly or easily do.

That being said, 500 Firepaper isn't likely to die today, but don't be surprised if it suddenly stops working at some point in the future.

OK, First off 500px can suck on deez.  Chainfire is one of if not the BEST contributor to custom fully functional AMAZING feats for rooted phones and all around amazing applications.  Chainfire has saved me hundreds of dollars over the years and has a very large (maybe silent) but LARGE fan base, I have a ton of friends who know the name and never post online about anything so you just wouldn't know they are fans, I can imagine it's not just them who are silent fans.  Maybe 500px should take the time to actually appreciate the online community outside their walls, I had no flippin clue what 500px was and never would it if wasn't for Chainfire.  So maybe they should take their lubed up heads out of their asses and realize how much better the world is with people like Chainfire.  How much better the world is BECAUSE of people like Chainfire, not because of head sucking deal snubbin nose in the air troglodytes.

Bill Wood commented on 2015-12-06 at 23:16:

Are you talking about the watermark at the bottom of the image? That's not such a big deal. More upsetting is that 500 Firepaper sometimes uses 3 to 10 percent CPU and runs down my battery overnight.

Marc Visconte commented on 2016-03-07 at 22:22:

I'm late to the party. I found this months ago, and only JUST started using this. I've been missing this! This is the MOST appropriate app I have seen in a while. It is pretty perfect. It does a spectacular job doing its one thing: providing a simple, easy, highly functional interface to totally show off beautiful artwork. Magnificent in its simplicity. It fits m my tablet screen perfectly in landscape or portrait - something that the manufacturer couldn't do in several releases. It's lightweight, fast, easy.

I really think that 500px should be paying YOU, not the other way around. They're just an aggregator service - a portal for artists. Your app extends their portal and provides added functionality.

I haven't kicked in for your other apps that I use, but I'm on my way to register a Play Store deposit so I can remedy that and give you a little of the reward you deserve for your talents. Thank you.

Marc Visconte commented on 2016-03-09 at 20:38:

Just a note. I got the SuperSU Pro - thinking I was paying for your SuperSU. The interal graphics look the same. Afterwards, I noticed that the developer name on the SuperSU Pro is CodingCode. Is that YOU? If not, a) I need to hit up Google for a refund, and b) you have some one that looks like they're passing themselves off as you.

Ryan Hayle commented on 2016-03-10 at 06:54:

+Marc Visconte That is the right version, same one I have. It is linked from the SuperSU thread on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053

I hadn't noticed the different author before... That's interesting. Probably some scheme to get around paying VAT or something!

Ray Wallace commented on 2016-03-10 at 10:33:

I did uninstall and reinstall the app, and it worked for a little while, but then went blank again. No images on the home screen, but when I go into the history, there are multiple pictures shown. Not sure what's going on with it, but it's frustrating, mainly because I love the app and the pics are amazing. I just wish it would work more than sporadically.

Tim Ivers commented on 2017-08-25 at 14:53:

+Jay Rosengren It's out of Chainfire's hands; this is entirely because 500px doesn't want to allow the sort of access that 500 Firepaper needs to, well, be 500 Firepaper. And that stinks, because 500Fp was a legitimate reason to have an Android device vs an Apple device.

It worked for sometime this morning and stopped again after clearing cache.

i just ran across this post while trying to figure out why it stopped working. 500px seems like a hard company to deal with so i understand moving on. obviously it's up to you, but hopefully you come up with some free time to create a new product that works with a less shady service. if not, it was cool while it lasted.

Greetings Chainfire!

I've enjoyed using 500 Firepaper for many years as well as other apps and tools you've created over the years. Today was a sad day for me as 500 Firepaper has stopped refreshing and retrieving pictures from 500px. Just wondering if there's anything you can do to breathe a little more life into the app and get it working again?

Cheers!

Boo 500px and their mean photographers!

Have to say though that I, and I expect others would have paid a small sub with watermarks i... I hope you did well with the venture!

Michael Hopper commented on 2017-09-08 at 13:23:

500 Firepaper is hands down, the best live wallpaper blur app in the store. But given the author, that's not surprising. :)

It's too bad that 500px just doesn't want to be a bit more cooperative.

As a suggestion, would it be possible to rework the app to pull images from other sources? Reddit, Imgur, Flickr?

I've tried other live wallpaper apps that display the nicely blurred image as a background, but none even come close to working as well as this app does. It will be a shame to lose this one.

I wouldn't mind paying for a premium version of the app. If that would solve the problem. Because 500 firepaper is unique & beautiful.

Chainfire commented on 2017-09-10 at 06:49:

Things stopped working on the same day I left for vacation. I returned yesterday and I'm looking at what is going on. It seems 500 Firepaper is currently being rate-limited (in other words, can only download X pictures in Y time).

I am not yet sure if this rate limiting is per-IP (more or less per device), per-API-key (all 500 Firepaper users together), or perhaps even a shadowban (500px servers saying we are being rate-limited, but having no intent to ever give us pictures again).

Rate limiting by itself is no surprise, there are more than a few 500 Firepaper users and altogether I don't doubt we generate massive amounts of traffic for 500px. I just hope the problem can be worked around. I don't think we can count on the 500px guys themselves to be any help, though.

+Chainfire Firepaper is the default wallpaper app on all my android devices, I hope it starts working again. The app's muzei extension stopped working a long time back, was it due to lack of support from 500px or does it have something to do with the latest version of muzei?

Sigh, it really was the best, thanks Chainfire for all you do!

No image available!

Please make sure Wi-Fi is turned on, and your battery is at least half full.

This is my new wallpaper from many days...

Battery is full and Wi-Fi is turned on.

Fix please

Was a great app while it lasted.

This app is the most beautiful I've ever used. .. I totally agree to pay till 10 € for it works again. ... I'm sure that an arrangement is possible with 500px. ..

Same Boat :/ I always pay for all chainfire apps but not working now :/

Jovin Philip commented on 2017-09-14 at 23:49:

There's a similar app called "500px live", it is not as good as 500 Firepaper as it doesn't change wallpaper automatically but you can change it by 2 finger tap on the home screen.

Jovin Philip commented on 2017-09-15 at 03:37:

*correction 500px live does change wallpaper automatically every 2 hours on the lite version.

harish varma commented on 2017-09-18 at 15:05:

It started working on all my devices!!!

Ric J commented on 2017-09-19 at 07:44:
