EOL-ing all my root-related things

In practice this has already been the case for some time, but today I'm making it official: all my root-related things are now end-of-life.

About half a year ago I decided I needed a break from everything Android, and reflect on how I wanted to proceed with it, if at all. Right now, it does not seem likely I will pick up development of any of my root-related packages or apps again.

For some of these I had big plans, and while it leaves me somewhat sad to not implement them, I am also unwilling to commit the time and energy right now to make those plans a reality - or even keep the packages updated. You can't have it both ways, so it's all getting shelved, probably indefinitely.

I'm going to start doing some spring cleaning on my apps, sites and threads over the next few weeks. Some will disappear, others will start with having a notice about them no longer being updated (yes I know for some of them it's about time too!) for now.

There are some non-root apps that I do plan to update again, but some will be shelved as well.

I am currently working on a (non-Android-related) project that is taking up most of my time, so those that I do want to update will have to wait a bit longer still.

In case you have missed the news, 500 Firepaper will also stop functioning on June 15, as 500px is shutting down their API. It is unlikely I will have the time to implement a different image serving back-end to the app before that happens.

There have been a bunch of requests to open source specific apps, and indeed it is (and has been for a while) on my todo-list to look into just that - I'm not promising anything, though.

Again I would like to thank everyone who has supported me and my developments over the years! I've met great people and made good friends, some of which I'm now actively working with on other projects, even.

But at the moment I'm not using root on my main Android devices for anything other than development, which turns it into a circular reference for me. As for regular Android, I have not been particularly enamoured with the direction it has been going in either.

But just because I'm not enthusiastic about working on these things now doesn't mean a new idea or project can't come along to change that at any time.

Thank you for opening up possibilities to the world. I was a total diehard fan, even paid for su pro. I did try magisk but wasn't impressed. As far as moving on, I can relate. Started in the unlock, customizing, custom roms back with ppc (windows phone 6) all being htc's and had to switch when (in my opinion) they lost touch with the consumer, and first time ever, switched. After getting my note 8 on pre- order, and there being no way to unlock bootloader, no systemless root, and only root that did work left us with battery only charging to 80%, I dropped out of anything android. Lost interest. Went on to other things.

I'm sure you have your own reasons. And I do understand.

Maybe "passing the puck and moving on" would be a good farewell gesture, but (for lack of better words) lost time in your personal life, sleepless nights that may have kept you away from a loved one, or any other sacrifice someone else close to you paid. Holding on to what you have left, it's all you.

Pandah The Wicked commented on 2018-05-05 at 18:26:

Every single Android OS user, rooted, non-rooted or one of the uneducated/unconcerned masses, owes +Chainfire a huge debt of gratitude for the countless innovations and refinements that have come from his dedication to bringing his best to the mobile platform for years. I have rooted many devices over the past 8 years and enjoyed an all new experience unknown to me before this, owing much of that to this amazing developer and Android enthusiast who amongst other projects brought us the legendary SuperSU and provided the community a powerful solution to get us started in the world of rooted devices. His knowledge, devotion and reliability in this area of interest kept us coming back with each new Android device for a tool that allowed us a safe and stable application to manage root access/superuser rights, the very first step in the process, no, the journey that begins with each of us and eventually brought new features and functionality to the users of Android OS, via 3rd party projects and continued innovation from the development community that added amazing new ways to use our phones, tablets, watches & boxes - many of said innovations eventually incorporated into the operating system itself as Android OS matured and grew into a truly outstanding mobile OS with each new update gradually growing into it's own as development spurred design and design drove the entire project forward to become the behemoth we have explored more than most thanks in great part to the work of +Chainfire I could rant and rave and ramble for days, weeks and months about how I feel about the development community, root vs. non-root, pros and cons, Google vs. Apple and why we should/shouldn't do this, that or the other and inevitably it'll always include an enthusiastic chapter about this developer and his contributions to the only mobile OS I've ever known or wanted to for that matter. But I have done enough (and then some ?) of that already and for now I'll simply close this addition to the original post with a long overdue and heartfelt "thanks for the memories" and well wishes to you in all your future endeavors both professional and personal. And I hope to one day see your influence and ability in some shape or form return to the best OS around, one that wouldn't be nearly as awesome as it is today without your dedication, determination and all the (unpaid/under appreciated hours spent working under the hood and behind the scenes to bring your vision to the masses. You. Are. The Man. And will be missed but never forgotten, sir. Cheers to +Chainfire ??????✌?????

You single handedly restructured the very structure of the worlds society by opening the door of software development to classes of people that otherwise would never had had no chance of accessing such knowledge, such as myself. You have no idea how much I appreciate your'e work and all the pain it help me endure. Good luck to you and remember that I AM NOT ALONE!

Thank you for all your hard work. I loved being able to mod my phones, since the HTC Evo, and gain the extra freedom it allowed. I agree. Android is not really evolving and making our user experience better. I used to be android pure, but now I look forward to see what nifty tricks each hardware manufactor provide. I only really root for some kind of adblock control. I'll gladly support devleopers by allowing ads, but I'm not too keen on ads raping my app time. Take care. And thank you.

Hugo Cerqueira commented on 2018-05-06 at 03:08:

Sometimes we take things for granted, I never thought CHAINFIRE'S root tools would come to an end. It's just to linked with Android. Everytime I thought about anything root related, the only thing that would come to my mind would be Chainfire. It's almost mythical.. since my HTC HD2 days.

Thank you very much for all the time you devoted to us, your contribution would be forever linked with Android development, I think that half of the things done in the last years in Android development would never happen without your contribution.

Farewell dear Chainfire, thanks for everything.

This is sad but I can understand, seems Androids are going the way of the rest of the world: complicated and losing simplicity. A heartfelt thank you for all of the work you've done to make my life easier!

Richard Corbishley commented on 2018-05-06 at 14:58:

Back in the days of 4.2, and when Samsung phones were a little more open, I had an S3. It was an OK phone. Little bit slow, even compared to other models of the time, due to Samsung and their habit of bloating the hell out of everything. I discovered CF Auto Root, and, with a new phone coming in a couple months, gave it a try. With SuperSU, and later on, with me looking at custom ROMs, that phone got a new lease on life. If I hadn't been introduced to your work, I probably would be typing this from an iPhone, and not an Xperia running a custom ROM. Thank you for all the contributions you've made to the Android community, and we will always be grateful for what you've done for us.

Your apps helped me mod my first device, an old Samsung Galaxy S3, and from there I have been thrust into the world of Android ROMs, rooting, recoveries, and so much more. SuperSU was my first rooting app, and I will continue to use it on my devices into the far future.

I'm very sad to see it end this way. I purchased many of the pro versions of your apps, and hoped they would continue to be developed for years to come.

FlashFire had a huge amount of unfulfilled potential, to name but one.

No app will be as missed as SuperSU, however. Your dedication and hard work of many years should have served as the basis for many more years of active development by the new owners, but CCMT are slowly allowing it to bleed to death. Sadly, there is no rock solid alternative to take its place.

Burn-out is a terrible thing. I don't blame you one bit for making a clean break of it. Thanks for all of your work over the years, and I wish you success in your future ventures.
